ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Croatia Sun News) – The European Week of Sport 2019 began at Zagreb’s European Square on Saturday with five- and ten-kilometre races in which more than 5,000 citizens took part.
The event was organised by the State Office for Sport for the fifth year running under the motto #BeActive with the aim of encouraging as many people as possible to engage in some form of physical activity.
It was opened by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. “The message we are sending with this event is that sport, from the earliest days, is first and foremost about instilling great values for life such as friendship, fair play, honesty, team spirit, work, and perseverance.”
Plenkovic said he was pleased that Croatia’s top athletes had come to support the event, notably representatives of the Paralympic Committee, “because it’s extremely important that our policy of inclusion of persons with disabilities is also manifested through sport.”
He also recalled the National Sport Development Strategy for the 2019-26 period which the government adopted in July.
Zagreb’s European Square was turned into a big sports ground at which Olympic and Paralympic sports were presented. Visitors could also have a go at football, basketball, rifle shooting, bowling and arm wrestling as well as train with professional coaches.
The European Week of Sport 2019 will close in the coastal city of Zadar on September 28.
