ZAGREB, Oct 1 (Croatia Sun News) – Veterans’ Affairs Minister Tomo Medved on Tuesday fired the starting pistol to mark the beginning of the 18th memorial ultra-marathon from Zagreb to Vukovar during which nine runners will run 344 kilometres between the two cities over the next five days.
The race is organised by the City of Zagreb association of HOS fighters and is being held under the auspices of the City of Zagreb and the Veterans’ Affairs Ministry in honour of HOS fighters from Zagreb and other parts of the country who went to Vukovar in September 1991 to defend the city during the Homeland War.
Thanking veterans who defended Croatia, Medved said that what they did was a “grand act.”
“Unfortunately many of them laid down their lives for the freedom we enjoy today,” he added.
He thanked the runners who participate in the race every year saying that in that way they contributed to preserving the truth and the memory of “those great men to whom we are indebted”.
