Disabled people living on islands to be granted free ferry transport

ZAGREB, Oct 24 (Croatia Sun News) – The government sent a bill to parliament in a fast track procedure whereby the list of beneficiaries eligible for free travel on Adriatic passenger liners is extended to include disabled persons and children with impaired development.

The bill allows free ferry transport for several categories of disabled people including disabled war veterans with 100% disability, persons with 100% blindness, people with hearing impairment and so on.

The Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butkovic, said that the bill would apply to state-run ferry services.

The agency for coastal ferry transport will be responsible for controlling the use of island passes in order to prevent their abuse and the bill specifies penalties in cases of abuse of travel concessions.

Butkovic explained that about 30 associations representing disabled persons were involved in preparing the bill.
